A Casual Vacancy arises if a Councillor fails to make and deliver a Declaration of Acceptance of Office, becomes disqualified (because of, for example, bankruptcy or failure to attend meetings), resigns or dies.
Notice of Vacancy
The parish must give public notice of a vacancy as soon as possible in accordance with Section 232 of the Local Government Act, 1972. A Vacancy Notice is then issued.
If an election is not called within 14 days of the notice then the Parish Council can co-opt members onto the council.
Co-option Procedure
Anyone wanting to be co-opted on the council must submit a pen profile to the clerk. The clerk will then arrange an interview for the councillors to meet the candidates.
